It’s hard to describe the process of being introduced to Maggie Lee’s artwork. It is so openly diaristic that to really get it, you have to understand the person that it is coming from — if you can find her. Like many people familiar with her work, I was first introduced to her photographs for *Vice* magazine and through her mesmerizing blog. Since the 2013 passing of her mother, Maggie’s practice has turned more inward — reducing her internet presence to a mystery while her art production has only increased. We sat down in her Brooklyn apartment to discuss this, and her latest film, *Mommy* (2014), a testament to her mother and reconciling her upbringing in the hellish suburbs of New Jersey.
