Interview with Tauba Auerbach

Over the course of her short career, Tauba Auerbach has already drawn the eyes of the New York art and fashion worlds to her next move. Her work merges clean, precise aesthetics with explorations of scientific, linguistic, and mathematical concepts. She’s had two solo shows at Deitch Projects and at Standard in Oslo, and last year transformed the construction site of the new Whitney Museum into what looked like a psychedelic marble quarry. The first time I met Tauba, I was helping her sign and number a serigraph edition she’d made in collaboration with Printed Matter Inc. The edition was large, and her schedule was packed, so we split the work over two days. Needless to say, I could have forged her signature easily after watching her print it out methodically—identically—on the back of each piece.
