Interview with Vanessa Beecroft

Vanessa Beecroft’s work is iconic—instantly recognizable, polarizing, and rigorously formal. Her performances merge aesthetic precision with conceptual tension: rows of similar women, often unclothed, unified through hair color or matching shoes, standing motionless while viewers watch them as if behind glass. She’s been scrutinized for her work in Sudan and celebrated for her critique of fashion and voyeurism. Her most recent project was a collaboration with Kanye West, another figure who provokes starkly divided opinions. I spoke with Vanessa at her rented home beneath the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles.
