Spike Lee (born Atlanta, Georgia, 1957; raised in Brooklyn, New York) is one of America’s most influential filmmakers. This exhibition offered a rare glimpse into his personal collection, showing the objects, images, and memorabilia that have shaped his work. Over 450 items trace the throughlines of Lee’s life and career: Black history and culture, Brooklyn, sports, music, cinema, and family. Works by Kehinde Wiley, Deborah Roberts, and Michael Ray Charles appear alongside instruments once played by legendary musicians, historical photographs, and movie and sports memorabilia—revealing the networks of inspiration behind Lee’s storytelling. For the exhibition design, we approached each section as a stage set, moving visitors through immersive environments with bold, responsive typography. Marketing included a photoshoot with Spike Lee and Jamel Shabazz in Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn.
